Find your campus Fulbright Program Adviser at us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/search-for-a-fulbright-program-adviser. Missing the campus deadline means you must apply At-Large (unaffiliated with an institution), which is a competitive disadvantage for most awards.

Step 2 Browse the Award Search to confirm your country and grant type Go to us.fulbrightonline.org/applicants/award-search and search for your host country. Read the Award Description carefully — it tells you whether S/R or ETA is available, whether your field is recommended, whether language proficiency is required, whether extensive prior host-country experience disqualifies you, and what additional documents are required. Do not begin your Statement of Grant Purpose until you have read the full Award Description for your specific country and grant type.

Step 3 Identify your in-country affiliation (S/R applicants) For Study/Research applications, the selection panel evaluates “appropriate in-country affiliation and resources.” This means you need an institutional partner in the host country  a university department, research institute, or professional organisation willing to host you. Reaching out to potential affiliates early (now, not in September) is one of the most important things an S/R applicant can do. A strong affiliation letter significantly strengthens your proposal.

Step 4 Write your Statement of Grant Purpose This is the single most important document in your application. It must describe specifically and concretely  what you will research or study, where in the country, with what methodology, on what timeline, and why this project must be conducted in this particular country at this particular moment. Vague proposals (“I want to study public health in India”) consistently fail. Specific proposals (“I will conduct 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork at three urban primary health centres in Pune to examine how community health worker networks navigate household decision-making about childhood vaccination”) consistently advance.

Step 5  Write your Personal Statement The Personal Statement explains who you are, what has shaped your intellectual and professional trajectory, and what you will contribute to mutual understanding between the US and your host country. This is not a résumé in paragraph form it is a narrative about your motivation and your capacity to represent the US thoughtfully in another country.

Step 6 Secure three recommenders and brief them thoroughly Recommenders submit their letters directly through the application portal. Give them at least 4–6 weeks. Brief them specifically on your project, your chosen country, and the Fulbright’s mission of mutual understanding — not just academic achievement. The letters should speak directly to your proposal, not just your academic record.

Step 7  Complete Campus Review (enrolled students) If applying through an institution, your application goes through a Campus Committee Consultation and receives institutional endorsement (or not) before the national deadline. This process typically involves an interview in September. Take this seriously  strong campus endorsement matters.

Step 8  Submit through the national portal by October 6, 2026 at 5 PM ET Submit at apply.iie.org/fulbrightusstudent. The portal closes at exactly 5 PM Eastern Time. Do not wait until October 5. All application components including recommendation letters  must be submitted before the deadline. Letters submitted after the deadline will not be accepted even if your application was submitted on time.
